ABOUT CROSS CITY FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

Cross City First Baptist Church has a rich history that includes many pastors, leaders, and dedicated members. Founded on God’s word and fueled by a desire to reach people with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, FBC has sought to follow God’s leading for 149 years.
In 1876 the Florida State Baptist Mission Board sent two missionary preachers, Reverend R.E. Reed and D. F. Ward, to Dixie County who encouraged the organization of a church. In 1878 The newly formed Baptist church was first named Lydia Baptist. Charter members included Mac Mimms, John Edwards, Jake Futch, Allen Mikell, John W. Chewning, and Henry Parker.
In 1899 this church was presented to the Lafayette Baptist Association as the Hart Hamock Baptist Church. The first called pastor was Reverend J.S. Shepfield of Judson. Others who served as pastors included Reverend John Jewell, Reverend Henry Corbett, Reverend W.F. Ward, and Reverend T.M. Webb (1897); and C.F. Holmes (1899-1904).
The church was moved to Cross Roads in 1907 where church services were held in a building owned by Will Chavous. This building served as a school during the week. At this time the church kept the name of Lydia Baptist. In 1915 the first church building was constructed on the grounds of the Cross City Cemetery. This property was donated by Tom Ward. In 1922 the name of the church was changed to Cross City Baptist. Brother Charley Holmes and Brother Tom Webb were two preachers during this time of church history. In 1926 a new church was erected and used until 1938 when it was destroyed by fire.
